A beginner's guide to the

Kentucky Bourbon Trail

We were recently hired to create the ultimate Bourbon Trail tour for a birthday party and we learned a lot. Check out the trip report.  Below are 10 critical things for anyone planning a tour of the Bourbon Trail from our experience. The Trail makes an amazing trip for birthday parties, bachelor/ettes, and friend weekends.

1. Make a Plan

Plan your route in advance. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail spans over 100 miles, and some distillery tours sell out months in advance, so you’ll want to start your planning early.

2. Research Distilleries

Do your research and chose your distilleries wisely. There are many different distilleries on the bourbon trail, so you’ll want to narrow down your choices based on what kinds of bourbon you want to try, what facilities you want to see, and how much time you have for your visit. Need some guidance, check out the stops from my trip to the trail.

3. schedule some variety

Switch up your activities. Taking a tour at every stop can get monotonous, so make sure you break it up with some unique tastings and non-bourbon-related activities on your trip. The Muhammad Ali Center is a great option in the Downtown Louisville area.

4. bring your walking shoes

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking (and maybe even some running if you get behind schedule!), so make sure you wear comfortable shoes that can handle some pavement pounding.

5. ask a local

Phone a friend. If you know anyone in the area of the Bourbon Trail, give them a call. They might be able to help guide you to some of the best tours and bottle shops, while avoiding some of the less exciting ones. Don’t know anyone? Don’t worry, I know a guy that can help you out.

6. catch a ride

Plan for transportation. Driving is the best way to get around the bourbon trail, but if you’re not able or don’t want to drive, there are other options available, including bus tours and shuttle services. Mint Julep Tours is a great local company who can assist with transportation & route planning.

7. eat in style

Don’t forget to schedule some stops for food. Some distilleries have bars with some fantastic food on-site, which can be a great way to experience a location without taking a tour.

8. Don't Forget to Hydrate

Water is your friend. You’re going to be doing a lot of outdoor walking and indoor drinking, make sure you make a plan to hydrate accordingly. (And no, you can’t drink from any of the water towers).

9. Pick your Hotel wisely

The right hotel can make or break any trip. 21c Museum Hotel is one of my favorite operations in the Louisville area. They’ve got amazing rooms, a beautiful art gallery, and an award-winning bar and restaurant.

10. pack an extra bag

Or a cardboard carrier, if you want to be extra cautious. With any luck, you’ll need it for all the swag and fun bottles that you probably can’t get at home.

bonus track

Drink responsibly. Bourbon is strong stuff, so be sure to pace yourself in between tastings.

The Kentucky Bourbon trail started in 1999 as means to promote the state’s Bourbon industry. The original six distilleries on the trail were Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, and Evan Williams. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail has since grown to include over 30 different distilleries.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a great way to learn about the history of Bourbon and taste some of the best Bourbons in the world. If you’re looking for a fun and educational way to spend a day or two, I highly recommend taking a trip down the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Follow these steps, and you should be off to a great start in planning a memorable visit to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Need more guidance? Check out my 2022 Bourbon Trail Trip Report.
